The Leica R4s (1983-1987) is the value version of the R4: Leica removed the program and shutter-priority modes, leaving aperture-priority and full manual, and positioned it as the lower-cost entry to the R system. Mechanically and optically it is the same camera as the R4, built on the same Minolta-derived chassis with the same electronic shutter to 1/1000s and the same selective and integral TTL metering. A later R4s-2 (also called Mod.2) revision followed. If you never reach for program mode, the R4s gives up nothing over a full R4, which is why the two trade at nearly the same used price. It takes 2-cam and 3-cam R lenses.
Usually yes. Leica services many current and recent models, and independent specialists handle older and discontinued bodies, including the clean-lube-adjust (CLA) that vintage cameras often need. Parts can be limited on older or electronic models, so budget for a possible service and factor a CLA into the price on a body that has not been serviced recently.
What did Leica remove to make the R4s?
The program (P) and shutter-priority (T) automatic modes. The R4s keeps aperture-priority automatic and full manual, plus the R4’s selective and integral metering. Everything else, the body, the electronic shutter, the finder, and the mount, is identical to the R4.
Is the R4s worth less than a full R4?
On paper it is the cheaper model, but on the used market the R4 and R4s sell for almost the same money, because the deleted program and shutter-priority modes are features few film shooters miss. Buy on condition and meter health rather than on the badge.
What is the R4s-2 (Mod.2)?
A later running revision of the R4s with minor electronic and detail updates, sometimes listed as ‘R4s Mod.2’ or ‘R4s-2.’ It is the same value-model concept as the original R4s. Listings do not always distinguish the two, so judge a specific body on its serial range and condition.
What should I check on a used R4s?
The same things as any electronic R body: confirm the meter and aperture-priority auto exposure work, that all manual speeds fire, and that the battery contacts and seals are sound. As one of the cheaper R bodies, weigh any needed service against the low purchase price.
