The Leica R8 (1996-2002) is a clean-sheet, fully in-house redesign with no Minolta basis, the camera Leica built when it set out to make an unmistakably Leica SLR. The body is large and distinctive, with a deep integrated grip and a curved top, and the handling is divisive: shooters tend to love it or find it ungainly. Under the skin it is the most capable R short of the R9: an electronically timed vertical metal-blade shutter to 1/8000s, X-sync at 1/250 (with high-speed sync to 1/8000 using suitable flashes), and a sophisticated meter with selective (7mm), six-field matrix, center-weighted, and TTL-flash patterns.
