The Leica M4-2, produced from 1977 to 1980 in Canada, was the first M body built with cost reduction in mind: simplified construction, no self-timer, and brass top plate replaced with zinc. It also added a hot shoe and motor-drive coupling. Roughly 16,000 units were made. On the used market the M4-2 is the most affordable mechanical M, prized by working photographers who want the M experience without the M3/M4 premium. It accepts Leica's later motor drive and later 0.72x rangefinder modules.

Usually yes. Leica services many current and recent models, and independent specialists handle older and discontinued bodies, including the clean-lube-adjust (CLA) that vintage cameras often need. Parts can be limited on older or electronic models, so budget for a possible service and factor a CLA into the price on a body that has not been serviced recently.
