The Leica M (Typ 240), announced in 2012 and shipping from 2013, was the first CMOS digital M and the first digital M to offer live view and video. Its 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor (the Leica Max CMOS) and thicker body marked a clear break from the CCD M9. The M240 introduced features that became standard on later Ms: an external EVF (the EVF2), native R-lens support via the R-Adapter M, a higher-resolution 3-inch screen, and a larger battery. It was also the first M to drop the model number from its name. On the used market the M240 is among the most affordable full-frame digital Ms with modern CMOS rendering.

What accessories add the most value to a used Leica M (Typ 240)?
Condition is the main driver of value; on a modern digital body the accessories that move price are the genuine battery and charger, which are expensive to replace, plus the original box and papers. There is no period-case or matching-number premium the way there is on vintage and collectible Leicas, so condition and shutter count matter far more.
Can a used Leica M (Typ 240) still be serviced?
Usually yes. Leica services its current and recent digital bodies, and the Leica M (Typ 240) is new enough that support and parts are readily available. Servicing a digital body means sensor cleaning, firmware updates, and electronic repair, which Leica handles. Because most private and online sales are sold untested, check everything on arrival, especially the sensor, EVF, and card slots.
Does the Leica M (Typ 240) have live view and video?
Yes. The M (Typ 240) was the first digital Leica M with both. It records 1080p Full HD video and offers live view with focus peaking and magnified focus on the rear screen. It was also the first M to support an external electronic viewfinder (the EVF2) and the first to take Leica R lenses via the R-Adapter M, focused through live view. The later M (Typ 262) drops live view, video, and the EVF, while the M-P (Typ 240) keeps all of them.
Was the Leica M (Typ 240) part of the a la carte program?
Yes, but with a narrower menu than the film bodies. Leica's a la carte program (2004 to 2019) covered the M (Typ 240) alongside the MP and M7, but because a digital M has a fixed rangefinder and no paint-over-brass finish, the options were essentially cosmetic: a custom leather covering from a range of certified colors and textures, and an individual engraving. So a digital a la carte body is set apart by its leather and engraving rather than by finish or finder, and it carries a smaller, more taste-dependent premium than a film a la carte camera. After the program closed in 2019, Leica offered a similar custom leather and engraving retrofit from 2020, so a later custom job is not strictly an a la carte camera.
