The Leica M (Typ 262), released in 2015, is a stripped-down M240. It removes live view, video, and external EVF support, returning to a stills-only rangefinder. It keeps the same 24MP Leica Max CMOS sensor and Maestro processor as the M240, but swaps the brass top plate for aluminum, which drops the weight to about 600g (versus about 680g), and Leica fitted a quieter shutter-cocking mechanism. It launched at $5,195, well below the M240 and M-P. On the used market the M262 appeals to photographers who want a digital M without the live-view and video features added in the M240.

Frequently Asked Questions

What accessories add the most value to a used Leica M (Typ 262)?

Condition is the main driver of value; on a modern digital body the accessories that move price are the genuine battery and charger, which are expensive to replace, plus the original box and papers. There is no period-case or matching-number premium the way there is on vintage and collectible Leicas, so condition and shutter count matter far more.

Can a used Leica M (Typ 262) still be serviced?

Usually yes. Leica services its current and recent digital bodies, and the Leica M (Typ 262) is new enough that support and parts are readily available. Servicing a digital body means sensor cleaning, firmware updates, and electronic repair, which Leica handles. Because most private and online sales are sold untested, check everything on arrival, especially the sensor, EVF, and card slots.

Does the Leica M (Typ 262) have live view or video?

No. The M (Typ 262) deliberately removes live view, video, and external EVF support, leaving a stills-only rangefinder. This is the most commonly confused fact about the camera, partly because of the screenless M-D (Typ 262): the M (Typ 262) does keep its rear LCD for reviewing images and menus, it simply has no live view on it. The sensor (the same 24MP Leica Max CMOS as the M240) and the Maestro processor are unchanged, so files look the same as an M240's.
