The Leica M4 was the last classic M body made in true black paint, bare lacquer over brass, as a standard production finish, rather than the black chrome that took over starting with the M6 Classic in 1984. Black paint M4s brass through with use the same way a Millennium M6 or MP does, and a working photographer's example with decades of honest brassing is one of the most recognized collector objects in the whole used Leica market. That recognition shows up directly in price: black paint M4s trade at several times what a standard chrome-finish M4 asks, tracked separately here from the plain M4 price guide because pooling them together would badly distort both numbers.
