The Leica MD, produced from 1964 to 1966, is a viewfinderless M body built for scientific, technical, and copying work rather than handheld rangefinder photography. Essentially an M1 with the viewfinder removed, sharing the M2-generation body, it has no rangefinder and no viewfinder, and was intended for use on reproduction stands or with the Visoflex mirror housing for macro and long-lens work, or handheld by scale focus. Roughly 3,000 units were made. On the used market the MD is a scarce collector body, valued for its clean technical lineage and its place as the first of Leica's dedicated viewfinderless M cameras.

Frequently Asked Questions

What accessories add the most value to a used Leica MD?

Condition is the main driver of value; accessories add to it. For film and screw-mount bodies the pieces that matter most are original matching-number accessories and the correct period Leica case, and special or limited editions must keep their certificate of authenticity and any numbered or branded extras, or they sell far closer to a standard body. The original box, papers, manual, and receipt are useful provenance but are one component rather than the main draw. A complete original outfit will out-price a body-only listing in the same condition.

Can a used Leica MD still be serviced, and does it come with a warranty?

Usually yes. Leica services many current and recent models, and independent specialists handle older and discontinued bodies, including the clean-lube-adjust (CLA) that vintage cameras often need. Parts can be limited on older or electronic models, so budget for a possible service. On warranty: a used Leica MD from a dealer such as KEH, MPB, or an authorized Leica dealer typically carries a limited warranty, often 60 to 180 days, while private and most eBay sales are sold as-is, so test everything on arrival and factor a CLA into the price.
