The Leica MDa, produced from 1966 to 1976, is the M4-generation successor to the MD. It carries the M4 film transport, with the quick-load take-up spool and angled rewind crank, in a viewfinderless body with no rangefinder. Like the MD it was sold for photomicrography, copying, and scientific use, often paired with the Visoflex III or a reproduction stand. Roughly 14,400 units were produced (catalog 10103), making it by far the most common of the technical M bodies. On the used market the MDa is the most affordable way into the viewfinderless M family, and many are shot handheld today by scale focus, framing through a shoe-mounted finder.

Frequently Asked Questions
What accessories add the most value to a used Leica MDa?
Condition is the main driver of value; accessories add to it. For film and screw-mount bodies the pieces that matter most are original matching-number accessories and the correct period Leica case, and special or limited editions must keep their certificate of authenticity and any numbered or branded extras, or they sell far closer to a standard body. The original box, papers, manual, and receipt are useful provenance but are one component rather than the main draw. A complete original outfit will out-price a body-only listing in the same condition.
Can a used Leica MDa still be serviced, and does it come with a warranty?
Usually yes. Leica services many current and recent models, and independent specialists handle older and discontinued bodies, including the clean-lube-adjust (CLA) that vintage cameras often need. Parts can be limited on older or electronic models, so budget for a possible service. On warranty: a used Leica MDa from a dealer such as KEH, MPB, or an authorized Leica dealer typically carries a limited warranty, often 60 to 180 days, while private and most eBay sales are sold as-is, so test everything on arrival and factor a CLA into the price.
